Salt producers in Tamil Nadu are sounding the alarm as unseasonal rains and policy hurdles cripple production in Thoothukudi. The state recently imported 40,000 tonnes of salt from Gujarat—an unprecedented move driven by weather disruptions and structural issues, including the non-renewal of Central salt land leases.
Industry leaders are urging the government to classify salt farming as agriculture, unlock subsidies, and transfer unused Central lands to small producers. As Gujarat salt rolls in by rail, Tamil Nadu’s future as a salt powerhouse hangs in the balance.
