The EU Blue Economy Report 2025 has formally recognised sea salt production as part of the Marine Non-Living Resources sector, marking a major policy win for Europeโs salt industry. This milestone follows EUsaltโs advocacy efforts with the European Commission and Joint Research Centre, spotlighting sea saltโs economic and environmental role.
Now classified under โOther minerals,โ sea salt extraction is acknowledged for its regional importance, generating โฌ432 million in 2023 and employing over 2,200 people. With 3 million tonnes produced last yearโmainly in Spain, Italy, France, and Greeceโthis inclusion strengthens the sectorโs position in EU sustainability and economic resilience planning.
