Engie Tests Hydrogen Storage in Salt Cavities

Engie has completed successful tests storing green hydrogen in salt caverns 800m underground at its Etrez site in France. Part of the €15.5M Hypster project, the trial confirms salt’s suitability for fast, large-scale hydrogen storage—key to stabilizing renewable energy supply.

Regulatory frameworks and cost remain the next hurdles before commercial rollout.
