Turda Salt Mine Faces Structural Crisis

Romania’s iconic Turda Salt Mine, a historic tourist destination in Transylvania, is under threat from water infiltration affecting multiple underground galleries. Officials warn of potential landslides and long-term damage unless immediate intervention is made.

The municipality has requested 30 million lei for repairs, but national funds are currently stalled. The site, which once served as a WWII air-raid shelter and now hosts a Ferris wheel and salt lakes, faces a crisis similar to the recently closed Praid mine, underscoring the urgency of preserving its structural integrity.
