Afghanistan Bans Salt Imports After Achieving Self-Sufficiency

Afghanistan has officially banned salt imports after reaching a milestone domestic production of 344,000 tons annually, surpassing the 300,000-ton national demand. Extraction from 12 mines across 10 provinces now feeds 53 active processing plants.

Officials state that protecting local producers is key to economic growth and foreign investment. However, experts warn that outdated laboratories and a lack of standard compliance still hinder the sector’s full industrial and export potential.
