Nepal Supreme Court Blocks 1998 Iodized Salt Act

Nepal’s Supreme Court has halted the government’s planned enforcement of the Iodized Salt Act of 1998. The court ruled that the absence of implementing regulations, despite the law being passed 25 years ago, makes enforcement legally unsound.

Justices warned that the move could disrupt salt supply chains and public health safeguards. The court expressed concerns that the Act might open the market to unregulated private imports, posing long-term health risks to the population.
