Totma Revives Ancient Craft of Mineral-Rich Salt Production

In Totma, Russia, a new initiative aims to revive the town’s historic 15th-century salt production techniques using natural brine rich in iodine, magnesium, and potassium. The project will establish a vacuum furnace to produce “Totem salt” at a small industrial scale by August 2026.

The salt is extracted from 200 meters deep and requires no chemical enrichment. Alongside production, the initiative includes archaeological research and traditional training to promote the salt for both retail and tourism sectors.
