India: Industrial Salt Logistics Shifts to Stainless Steel

Jindal Stainless and Indian Railways have developed a corrosion-resistant 20-foot container made of 304-grade stainless steel to transport industrial salt. The prototype, tested near Gandhidham, Gujarat, aims to drastically reduce maintenance costs and extend asset life in corrosive salt logistics.

Western Railway is shifting from conventional iron wagons to this steel, container-based system. Trials showed that 33 tonnes can be loaded in 15 minutes, with a 48-wagon rake moving 3,300 tonnes. This upgrade offers significant operational and environmental gains by reducing the need for protective linings and intensive cleaning.
