$875,000 Fine for WA Salt Supply After Conveyor Death

WA Salt Supply has been fined $875,000 following the death of worker Craig Robertson, who was caught in an unguarded conveyor belt at the company’s North Coogee refinery in 2022. The investigation found that operators had used cardboard to fix a slipping conveyor, removing necessary guards in the process.

This is the first prosecution under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 related to a fatality. In response, the company has since installed a permanent safety fence and interlock system to prevent similar incidents.

WorkSafe Commissioner Sally North emphasized that properly guarding machinery is essential to prevent preventable fatalities.
