The EU Blue Economy Report 2025 has formally recognised sea salt production as part of the Marine Non-Living Resources sector, marking a major policy win for Europe’s salt industry. This milestone follows EUsalt’s advocacy efforts with the European Commission and Joint Research Centre, spotlighting sea salt’s economic and environmental role.
Now classified under “Other minerals,” sea salt extraction is acknowledged for its regional importance, generating €432 million in 2023 and employing over 2,200 people. With 3 million tonnes produced last year—mainly in Spain, Italy, France, and Greece—this inclusion strengthens the sector’s position in EU sustainability and economic resilience planning.
