Brazil Launches WTO Dispute as U.S. Tariffs Paralyze Salt Exports

Brazil’s salt industry is reeling as a 50% tariff imposed by the U.S. takes full effect, halting sea salt exports from Rio Grande do Norte. Industry leaders, including Siesal-RN, warn that this is effectively an embargo, threatening over 550,000 tons of annual sales and putting 4,000 jobs at risk.

The state government has launched emergency tax relief measures and is seeking new markets in Asia and Latin America. Meanwhile, Brazil has formally initiated a WTO dispute, arguing that the tariffs violate international trade norms and are politically motivated.
