Despite rising salt prices in Vietnam’s Sa Huynh region—currently averaging 80,000 VND per 50kg bag—local salt farmers are grappling with production delays due to erratic weather. Unseasonal cold rains have postponed the start of the harvest season, leaving farmers without stock to benefit from high market prices.
Veteran producers highlight a persistent issue: “good price, bad harvest; good harvest, low price.” While some have invested in tarpaulin-based salt production to improve quality and yield, the lack of synchronized infrastructure, proper storage facilities, and a reliable consumption market continues to limit profitability.
Efforts are underway. The Sa Huynh Salt Production Cooperative 2, with over 200 member households, is planning a storage yard to stabilize supply and support farmers. Local authorities are also promoting a project that links traditional salt fields with community tourism, aiming to modernize production while preserving heritage.
