West Africa’s Salt Ambitions Expand: McDan Targets Industrial Hub in Ghana

Electrochem Ghana, a subsidiary of McDan Group, has launched efforts to secure strategic partners for what could become West Africa’s largest industrial salt hub, based in Ada, Greater Accra. This bold move is part of a long-term vision to scale production from the Ada Songor salt field to 5 million tonnes annually, while adding significant value before export.

Beyond refining salt, McDan’s ambition is to transition into the chemical production space, with plans to establish a caustic soda plant and other industrial facilities. The estimated investment for the full infrastructure buildout stands at $85 million.

Electrochem is currently working toward an output of 1.2 million metric tons by 2026, with a target of 2 million metric tons supported by an upcoming IPO on the Ghana Stock Exchange aimed at raising $30 million in equity. The project spans an impressive 41,000 acres, making it the largest salt field in the subregion — and a cornerstone of Ghana’s industrial growth strategy.
