Portugal Quietly Reduces Salt in Packaged Foods by 15%

Between 2018 and 2023, Portugal cut salt content in packaged foods by nearly 15% without altering consumer habits, according to a DGS report. The reformulation targeted items like snacks, cereals, bread, and ready meals.

This initiative led to a nationwide reduction of 18 tons of salt. Officials are now considering expanding the program to other products like cheese and charcuterie to further improve public health.
