Bangladesh’s Salt Season Ends Below Target at 2.25M Tonnes

Bangladesh concluded its 2024–25 salt season with 2.25 million tonnes, falling short of the 2.61 million tonne target due to adverse weather. Despite the shortfall, authorities assured stable supply given reduced industrial demand and large carryover stocks from previous seasons. Salt farmers face mounting challenges from alleged illegal imports of sodium-based chemicals mislabelled as industrial salt, impacting domestic prices. Farm-gate rates have declined, and concerns are rising over the viability of salt farming. Meanwhile, plans for a 25,000-acre salt industry park in Sandwip remain unfulfilled, as informal private initiatives grow in Chattogram.
