Madeira Debates Mandatory Use of Iodized Salt in Food Industry

The Regional Parliament of Madeira is considering legislation that would require the use of iodized salt in most food production sectors to address iodine deficiency in the population. The bill mandates iodized salt in baked goods, frozen foods, catering, and school cafeterias.

While household use remains voluntary, the proposal underscores rising public health concerns as Madeira registers higher iodine deficits than mainland Portugal. Traditional products may be exempt to avoid interference with local tastes.
