Thailand Drafts Phased “Sodium Tax” for Packaged Foods

Thailand is preparing a proposal for a phased tax on high-sodium packaged foods, similar to its successful sugar-tax model. The framework aims to reduce hypertension and kidney disease risks by pushing food manufacturers toward product reformulation.

The tax is expected to cover total sodium per serving in packaged items, excluding freshly cooked meals. A multi-year transition period is planned to allow the industry to adjust R&D, labeling, and pricing strategies, which could significantly impact the salt consumption patterns in the region.
