Vietnam’s Salt Capital Eyes Modernization and Value Addition

Known as the nation’s salt heartland, producing nearly half of Vietnam’s annual salt output, Ninh Thuan is now pushing forward with efforts to modernize its salt industry and enhance export potential.

Local authorities have launched a decade-long initiative titled “Improving the Value of Salt Production and Processing in Ninh Thuan Province from 2021 to 2030.” The project focuses on stabilizing over 3,000 hectares of salt production land, integrating modern technology, and strengthening supply chains through partnerships between cooperatives and enterprises.

Farmers in districts like Ninh Hai and Thuan Nam are increasingly shifting from traditional methods to tarpaulin-based salt farming, significantly improving both yield and quality. The region now produces over 431,000 tons of salt annually, much of which meets industrial-grade standards.

Officials also envision integrating the local salt craft with tourism, creating a dual economic benefit while preserving cultural heritage.
