U.S. Accepts Brazil’s WTO Tariff Dispute, Citing National Security

Washington has agreed to Brazil’s WTO consultation request over the new 50% tariffs but defended the measures as national security decisions. The tariffs, imposed by the U.S. earlier this month, were framed as retaliation against Brazil’s handling of recent political trials.

While Brazil seeks relief through the international dispute system, the U.S. maintains the levies are essential to protect its security and economy. This trade friction continues to impact large-scale sea salt exports from Brazil’s northeastern regions.
