The India–Pakistan trade ban has now brought the Himalayan pink salt industry in India to a near standstill. Importers who previously sold over 2,000 tonnes quarterly have seen operations fully freeze following New Delhi’s move to block not just direct but all third-country re-routed imports from Pakistan.
With Pakistani salt supply cut, wholesale prices in cities like Kolkata have surged from ₹50/kg to as high as ₹80/kg. Panic buying continues in northern and eastern India, especially with pink salt’s cultural and religious importance during fasting seasons.
Meanwhile, Pakistani exporters are turning toward direct value-added exports to global buyers, seeking to shed reliance on uncredited Indian intermediaries. This trade breakdown may permanently reshape sourcing routes and pricing structures in the regional rock salt economy.
