Goa: Demand Rises as Traditional Salt Pans Fade

While demand for sea salt is rising in Goa, traditional salt pans (mithagar) are steadily disappearing due to high labor intensity and a shrinking workforce. Younger generations are increasingly reluctant to enter the manual trade of brine handling under harsh sun conditions.

Many pans have remained idle for years, with some plots shifting to other commercial uses. Experts warn of a permanent loss of traditional production capacity unless local support and restoration efforts make these heritage salt pans economically viable again.
