Ethiopia Launches Double-Fortified Salt Program

Ethiopia has launched a national program to add folic acid to iodized salt, aimed at reducing folate-related neural tube defects. The roadmap, supported by the Ethiopia Public Health Institute (EPHI) and Nutrition International, delivers a standardized micronutrient dose through this daily staple.

Implementation priorities include industry transition planning and strict quality assurance protocols. This initiative builds on Ethiopia’s existing universal salt iodization platform to ensure consistent fortification as the program scales nationally.
