Salt Shortage in Cuba Reflects Deepening Economic Crisis

Over 450,000 residents in Artemisa, Cuba, have been without salt for more than three months due to ongoing distribution failures. The crisis highlights structural weaknesses, exacerbated by the energy crisis, poor infrastructure, and bureaucratic inefficiencies. Despite having natural salt reserves, Cuba’s salt industry struggles with obsolete equipment, lack of investment, and mismanagement. The situation has forced many to turn to the black market, while some risk using hazardous substitutes. The broader supply crisis extends to other essentials like rice, sugar, and peas, worsening living conditions. With no clear timeline for resolution, uncertainty and frustration grow among the population.
